It is a device which strengthens weak AC signals. The process of strengthening the weak signals is known as amplification.
Transistor As an amplifier

Circuit diagram for amplifier using n-p-n transmission is as shown. The emitter base junction is forward biased with a DC source VBE and the collector baser junction is reverse biased with the DC source Emitter is made common to both input and output terminal and its connected to earth.
The AC signal to be amplified base and the emitter, the output is obtained across the load resistor RL.
When the input signal is applied. This causes the variation in the emitter current which in turn alters the collector current to a large extent. The voltage across the load resistor RL varies and large output voltage is obtained across RL. Thus the weak signal is amplified.
